Skywatchers across much of the Western Hemisphere shared striking views of a deep partial lunar eclipse on August 28, when almost the entire Moon moved into Earth’s darkest shadow.
Why the Moon looked red
NASA’s Scientific Visualization Studio calculated that 96.3 percent of the lunar disk entered Earth’s umbra at the moment of greatest eclipse, around 4:13 a.m. Universal Time. Because a small portion remained outside the umbra, the event was technically partial rather than total.
The darkened portion of the Moon took on copper and red tones. That color is produced when sunlight passes through Earth’s atmosphere before reaching the lunar surface. Shorter blue wavelengths are scattered more strongly, while red and orange light is bent into the shadow.
Where the eclipse was visible
The event favored the Americas, although Alaska and northwestern Canada were outside the best viewing area. Observers in western Europe and western Africa could also see part of the eclipse, depending on local weather and the Moon’s position near the horizon.
Online photographs varied in color and brightness because cameras, lenses, exposure settings and atmospheric conditions were different. A vivid red image is not necessarily fake, but highly saturated edits can exaggerate what a person saw with the unaided eye.
Why eclipse clips spread so quickly
Lunar eclipses are unusually shareable astronomical events because they can be watched safely without special filters. The visible changes unfold slowly enough for people to compare views from different cities, while the Moon remains recognizable even in a phone photograph.
NASA’s visualization helps separate the science from the social-media spectacle by showing the Moon’s timed passage through the penumbra and umbra. The next eclipse season arrives in February 2027, with an annular solar eclipse on February 6 and a penumbral lunar eclipse on February 20–21.
