Britain’s Ministry of Defence is supporting a compact powered paraglider designed to give individual service members a way to travel by air without a runway, helicopter or transport aircraft.
The ministry said on August 28 that Wiltshire-based start-up Blakcro has developed what the government describes as the United Kingdom’s first foot-launched military paraglider system. The Royal Marines and Parachute Regiment are expected to evaluate the approach in trials during the coming months.
The announcement presents the system as a lightweight option for military mobility, but several headline figures—including its maximum range, assembly time and low-signature characteristics—come from the Ministry of Defence and the manufacturer. The government release did not include independent test data, detailed trial results or a public procurement schedule.
A rucksack-sized aircraft concept
According to the ministry, the system folds into a case roughly the size of a large rucksack and can be assembled in under eight minutes, including in darkness. A pilot launches on foot by running while the engine and canopy generate enough lift for flight.
The government says the aircraft uses a UK-made titanium frame and can travel up to 200 miles under its own power. It is also described as having a low acoustic, visual and radar signature. Those claims are central to the proposed use: moving a small number of personnel without relying on conventional aircraft or prepared airfields.
Unlike a normal unpowered paraglider, a powered paraglider includes a motor and propeller, usually carried in a frame behind the pilot. That enables takeoff from relatively open ground and allows continued flight without launching from a steep slope. Military adaptation introduces additional requirements, such as carrying protective equipment and operating in difficult conditions.
The Ministry of Defence says the Blakcro design can accommodate body armour, night-vision equipment and weapon mounts. Smashology Media is not reproducing promotional claims that the system is undetectable; no aircraft is literally invisible, and the official announcement only says the design aims for a lower signature.
Government support and planned trials
The project has received about £6 million in backing from the Ministry of Defence. The company worked with UK Defence Innovation, an organization intended to help smaller firms and newcomers bring technology into the defence system.
Blakcro first engaged through an open innovation call and later received support across additional projects. One project received a Defence Innovation Loan, which the government says helped the company move from a single product toward production.
The official release says Blakcro has grown from three employees to 11 and now holds three prime contracts involving the UK and NATO allies. It also says systems are being supplied during 2026 and into 2027, and that the technology is already in operational use. The release does not identify customers, units, quantities or locations, which is understandable for a defence system but limits public verification of those claims.
The most concrete next step is the planned evaluation by the Royal Marines and Parachute Regiment. Trials should help determine whether the aircraft can meet real requirements for safety, payload, reliability, training and performance in varied weather.
Where the idea could help—and where questions remain
A compact aircraft could offer flexibility in locations where conventional aviation is unavailable or too visible. It may also be cheaper to deploy and simpler to transport than a helicopter. Those advantages, however, do not remove the limitations that apply to powered paragliders.
Weather is a major consideration for any lightweight canopy aircraft. Wind, turbulence, precipitation and terrain can affect safe takeoff, navigation and landing. A pilot must also manage the combined weight of the motor, fuel, protective equipment and mission gear.
The ministry’s announcement does not disclose the test conditions behind the stated 200-mile range, including payload, fuel load, wind or reserve requirements. A maximum figure achieved in favorable conditions may differ substantially from a useful operational radius. It also does not provide noise measurements, radar data or safety records.
Those omissions do not mean the technology cannot work. They mean the claims should be treated as reported specifications until the upcoming trials produce evidence that can be shared publicly.
A small-company route into defence procurement
The project is also an example of the UK government’s effort to bring smaller technology companies into defence procurement. For a start-up, technical support, loans and access to military users can shorten the distance between an early prototype and a field evaluation.
That faster path can encourage innovation, but it also makes transparent testing important. Military users need evidence that a system is reliable and safe, while the public needs enough information to understand what government funding has achieved.
For now, the powered paraglider should be viewed as a mobility system entering further evaluation—not as a proven replacement for helicopters, parachute insertions or conventional ground transport. The trials by specialist units will be the next meaningful indicator of whether the design’s reported capabilities translate into dependable service.
