A 62-year-old man has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison after British investigators found an almost-complete 3D-printed firearm at his home in Telford, Shropshire.
David Boylett was sentenced at Shrewsbury Crown Court on August 10. He had pleaded guilty in January to attempting to possess a component part of a prohibited firearm, possessing ammunition and holding an overpowered air rifle without a licence.
What officers found
National Crime Agency officers recovered a partially completed polymer firearm, firearm components, tools and two 3D printers. Forensic specialists concluded that about 15 minutes of finishing work was needed to make the printed weapon functional.
Investigators also found ammunition, a powerful air rifle and part of a shotgun reported stolen from a vehicle in Herefordshire in 2012. Boylett was arrested in July 2021, making the sentence the outcome of a case that required detailed technical examination.
Digital files became important evidence
Analysis of a computer and memory card found documents about converting firearms, making ammunition and printing components. A folder contained instructional videos for the same firearm model recovered from the property, while a phone video showed a printer producing one of the components.
NCA specialists used the recovered files to print the remaining parts and successfully test-fire a completed version. That test helped establish that the digital design and seized components could produce a functioning weapon rather than a harmless replica.
Why 3D-printed firearms pose a challenge
Traditional firearms investigations often focus on theft, illegal sales or smuggling. Printable designs add a different route: a person can attempt to manufacture key parts with equipment that also has many lawful uses.
The printed material is only part of the picture. Ammunition, metal components, finishing tools and evidence of intent can all affect whether a device is capable of firing and how prosecutors describe the conduct.
What the sentence reflects
The court case was not based only on an interest in firearms or possession of a printer. It involved a nearly completed weapon, ammunition and other unlicensed items, supported by files and videos recovered from digital devices.
The case shows why technical testing is central to emerging-firearms prosecutions: investigators must demonstrate what was being made, how close it was to completion and whether the result could operate as a real weapon.
