Ryan Garcia retained his WBC welterweight title with a second-round stoppage of Conor Benn in Las Vegas on Saturday, September 12. The American champion made a decisive first defence of his belt at T-Mobile Arena, ending Benn’s first world-title challenge early.
Garcia controlled the opening round as Benn pressed forward. In the second, Garcia knocked the British challenger down with a right hand. Benn got back to his feet, but Garcia resumed the attack and the referee stopped the contest while Benn was backed against the ropes, according to BBC Sport’s ringside report.
How the fight ended
The stoppage came at 1 minute 25 seconds of round two, Fightnews reported. Garcia kept his 147-pound crown and registered his first successful title defence. Benn, who had returned to the welterweight division after more than four years away from the weight, suffered the second defeat of his professional career.
The quick finish underlined the difference in timing and accuracy on the night. Benn’s aggressive approach gave Garcia counterpunching opportunities, and the champion capitalised before the contest could develop into a longer fight.

What comes next?
After the result, Garcia exchanged words with fellow welterweight champion Teofimo Lopez at ringside, BBC Sport reported. No next bout has been announced. Benn must now consider his route back from a loss in his first attempt at a world title.
