The suspect charged in the killing of Tasia Fortune pleaded not guilty during a court appearance in Jackson, Mississippi, as investigators continued working to determine whether anyone else was involved.
Jarques Ratliff, 51, appeared in Jackson Municipal Court on Monday, September 14. A judge denied bond, meaning he will remain in custody while the murder case moves forward.
What investigators have confirmed
Fortune, a 29-year-old mother of four, was found dead behind a vacant home on Road of Remembrance in Jackson on August 3. Her body was discovered hanging from a tree, a circumstance that caused widespread alarm and drew attention beyond Mississippi.
The state medical examiner later ruled the death a homicide. Police arrested Ratliff on Friday after the medical finding and additional investigative work, according to accounts from the Associated Press and Mississippi Today.
Ratliff has been charged with murder. A charge is an accusation, and he is presumed innocent unless proved guilty in court.
Not-guilty plea and bond decision
At Monday’s hearing, Ratliff entered a not-guilty plea. The judge denied bond after hearing the initial information presented in court.
Mississippi Today reported that authorities said Ratliff attempted to conceal himself in a vehicle when officers moved to arrest him. His attorney did not provide a detailed public response after the hearing.
The case will now proceed through the criminal-court process, where prosecutors must present evidence supporting the charge and the defense will have an opportunity to challenge it.
Police say the investigation remains active
Jackson police have indicated that additional arrests are possible. That does not establish that another person participated, but it shows investigators have not treated the arrest as the end of the inquiry.
Authorities have not publicly released a complete account of Fortune’s final hours or a detailed motive. Those unanswered questions are likely to become central as the case advances.
Early reporting also showed inconsistent spellings of the suspect’s surname. Court and major-news accounts use “Ratliff,” which is the spelling used in this report.
A case carrying deep historical sensitivity
The location and manner in which Fortune was found evoked the history of racial terror and lynching in the United States, intensifying public concern. Both Fortune and Ratliff are Black, according to the Associated Press.
That context makes precise language especially important. The verified legal development is that Ratliff has been arrested, charged with murder, pleaded not guilty and been denied bond. Claims beyond the evidence released by police and the court should be treated cautiously.
What happens next
Future hearings are expected to address the evidence, formal charging process and scheduling. Investigators may also announce whether any additional suspects will be charged.
Fortune’s death has left four children without their mother. As the legal case develops, her identity and her family’s loss remain at the center of the story.
