The girl slipped from her mother’s grip

The toddler ran out of the Super King “El Rey del Ahorro” grocery store on Sunday, September 6, after slipping from her mother’s grip. A woman gave chase but slipped and fell before she could reach the girl. Cruz, who was operating a forklift outside the store at the time, rushed into the road after her.

Security footage shows Cruz grabbing the girl and pulling her backward as they both tumble safely to the ground in the lane closest to the store, moments before a silver minivan screeches to a halt in the middle lane. Car horns can be heard honking throughout the clip, which has since been viewed by millions online and was shared by outlets including CBS News.

Store names Cruz “Manager of the Year”

The grocery chain rewarded Cruz with 20,000 Mexican pesos, roughly $1,184, and named him “Manager of the Year” for his quick thinking. Cruz said he didn’t think before taking action, and that as a father himself he was driven by paternal instinct. He also urged parents to keep a close eye on their children in public spaces.
