A 15-year-old survived for roughly two days on an overturned fishing skiff in Alaska’s Bering Sea before a nearby vessel rescued him on September 7. The story has drawn widespread attention this week, but the ordeal ended in tragedy for his older brother and cousin, whose bodies were recovered.

The U.S. Coast Guard said an HC-130 aircrew spotted the teenager sitting atop the capsized boat at about 10:30 a.m., roughly four miles east of St. Lawrence Island. The aircrew dropped a raft and survival equipment, then laid a line of flares to guide the Northwest Explorer, a nearby vessel, to the scene. Its crew brought the teenager aboard while he was showing symptoms of hypothermia.

A rescue and a loss

The Associated Press identified the survivor, through a relative, as Derek Parker Aghnaanga. AP reported that the teenager, his brother and cousin had gone fishing before their boat capsized. A search involving federal, state and local responders ended after the survivor was rescued and the two deceased boaters were recovered.

Some social posts describe the teenager as having been adrift for “nearly three days.” The more precise reporting available to us says roughly two days; the Coast Guard’s corrected release confirms the rescue timing but does not establish an exact duration on the hull.
