Arrested moments before boarding

Edwin Omokhuale, 39, was detained by officers from An Garda Siochana on Wednesday, September 9, on an arrest warrant issued by the UK, as he prepared to board a flight to Paris at Dublin Airport. He faces money laundering charges in connection with a business email compromise fraud that netted roughly $23 million (around 19 million euro) from an Australian mining company in early 2023.

According to the National Crime Agency, investigators allege the fraud was orchestrated from within the UK, where Omokhuale was living at the time, and that employees of the mining company were deceived into transferring funds directly into bank accounts controlled by the perpetrators.

Extradition proceedings reported in September

Omokhuale appeared before a Dublin court on September 10 as UK authorities began extradition proceedings to return him to Britain to face the charges. The arrest, carried out jointly by Irish and UK law enforcement, adds to a growing list of international fraud cases pursued by the NCA in cooperation with European partners. The allegations against Omokhuale have not yet been tested in court.
